In 1913, Peking University established the Department of Physics, which was the first of its kind in China. In 1919, it was renamed the Department of Physics. In the fifties of the last century, the new Department of Physics of Peking University was established with Tsinghua University and Yenching University, and the first nuclear science, semiconductor physics, and geophysics majors in China were founded or participated in the establishment. In 2001, the School of Physics of Peking University was established on the basis of the Department of Protophysics, the Department of Technical Physics, the Department of Nuclear Physics, the Institute of Heavy Ion Physics, the Department of Geophysics, the Department of Atmospheric Physics, the Department of Meteorology, and the Department of Astronomy.

By the end of 2024, the college has 313 full-time faculty members, including 227 teaching and research personnel. It consists of 10 teaching and research units (General Physics Teaching Center, Basic Physics Experimental Teaching Center, Institute of Theoretical Physics, Institute of Modern Optics, Institute of Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Physics, Department of Technical Physics, Institute of Heavy Ion Physics, Department of Astronomy, Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, and Electron Microscopy Laboratory) and 2 physical research institutes (Beijing Modern Physics Research Center, Quantum Materials Science Center). It has taken the lead in the construction of four "double first-class" disciplines, including "physics," "astronomy," "atmospheric science," and "nuclear science and technology." It undertakes the construction of key scientific and technological innovation bases such as the National Key Laboratory of Artificial Microstructure and Mesoscopic Physics, the National Key Laboratory of Nuclear Physics and Nuclear Technology, the Collaborative Innovation Center for Quantum Matter Science, the Frontier Science Center for Nanophotoelectronics, the Beijing Key Laboratory of Medical Physics and Engineering, the Tornado Key Open Laboratory of the China Meteorological Administration, as well as the Dongguan Institute of Optoelectronics of Peking University, the Yangtze River Delta Institute of Optoelectronics of Peking University, the Beijing Laser Acceleration Innovation Center, and the Cross Platform for Light Element Quantum Materials.
