The Research Group on Offshore Aquaculture and Offshore Renewable Energy, led by Prof. CM Wang at South China University of Technology, Sincerely Invites You to Join Us!

About the University

South China University of Technology (SCUT), located in Guangzhou, is a nationally recognized key university in China. It ranks #187 in the U.S. News 2024 rankings and falls within the #101-150 range in the ARWU 2024 rankings. The School of Marine Science and Engineering is based at SCUT’s Guangzhou International Campus (GZIC), a state-of-the-art facility designed to strengthen the university’s global influence and research capabilities. Most undergraduate courses at GZIC are taught in English.

Academic Team
  • Chien Ming WANG: Visiting Professor at SCUT, Professor at the University of Queensland, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and Fellow of the Singapore Academy of Engineering.
  • Yan QU: Vice Dean, School of Marine Science and Engineering, South China University of Technology; Professor; Doctoral Supervisor.
  • Xiangfeng GUO: Associate Professor at the School of Marine Science and Engineering, SCUT, Doctoral Supervisor, National Talent Program, and Guangdong Province Young Top Talent.
  • Yunil CHU: Dr. Yunil Chu obtained his PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Queensland, Australia, in 2021. He worked as a Design Approval Engineer at DNV for 10 years (2007 – 2017), leading over 20 design approval projects for ships and deep-sea new-builds.
Research Areas
  • We are looking to recruit 2-3 postdoctoral researchers to engage in research related to large-scale offshore floating aquaculture platforms and offshore renewable energy development. The postdoctoral contract is for 2 years. During the postdoctoral period, there will be support for short-term visits and exchanges at the University of Queensland, Australia, and other internationally renowned research institutions.
  • As the global population grows, the demand for high-quality fish protein continues to rise. However, nearshore aquaculture faces challenges such as environmental pollution and limited space, driving a shift toward offshore fish farming. Traditional offshore aquaculture cages, however, struggle to withstand strong winds and waves while maintaining operational efficiency in areas like structure maintenance, fish breeding, harvesting, and energy supply. This project aims to develop an ultra-large floating offshore fish farming platform. By integrating breakwaters and flexibly connected floating structures, the platform creates a stable, sheltered environment that enhances fish survival rates and product quality. Additionally, it serves as a multifunctional hub, combining aquaculture with a breeding centre, fish processing facilities, and renewable energy sources such as wind and wave power.
