Job Description

Introduction to the Department

Peking University has a long-standing tradition of emphasizing the importance of sports, which dates back to the era of Beijing Normal University. In 1917, Mr. Cai Yuanpei, while presiding over school affairs, championed the principle of "freedom of thought, compatibility, and integration," and often placed sports as a top priority, even above moral, intellectual, and aesthetic education. His advocacy of "complete personality through sports" has been an enduring legacy at Peking University. After the outbreak of the First Zhifeng War in 1922, Peking University officially established the Department of Physical Education, which marked a significant milestone in integrating physical education into the university’s academic framework.

Since its inception, the Department of Physical Education and Research has played a key role in advancing physical education and sports activities at Peking University, growing and adapting through various historical phases. Following the founding of the People's Republic of China, the department has entered a new historical period and made significant contributions to the development of sports education in New China.

The concept of "Equal ability and political integrity, sound physique" has become the core educational philosophy of Peking University. This philosophy underscores the development of students' character and well-being, highlighting the importance of sports in campus life. In 2021, Peking University achieved the Healthy Campus certification from the International University Sports Federation (FISU), becoming the first university in Asia to receive this prestigious recognition.

Today, the Department of Physical Education and Research at Peking University is composed of 167 faculty members, including 59 in-service teachers, 9 professors, 31 associate professors, and numerous masters and doctoral supervisors. The department is responsible for a broad range of activities, including public sports education, sports training, research, and campus sports culture development. It is also engaged in managing sports teams and campus sports venues.

With over 300 academic papers published in the past five years, the department has gained recognition in the fields of sports humanities and social sciences, university sports, sports industry, and sports and health. The department is now recruiting outstanding young talents for physical education teaching and sports training.
