Job Description

Introduction to the Department

The Department of Sociology at Peking University has a long and rich history that dates back to the early 20th century. In 1916, Peking University offered its first sociology course, and in 1922, the Department of Sociology at Yenching University was founded, marking the first institution in China to train graduate students in sociology. The sociology major and master's degree program were restored and rebuilt in 1980, and the undergraduate program was established in 1983. The first doctoral degree program in sociology was established in 1985.

Today, the department offers three master's degree programs:

  1. Academic Master (Sociology)
  2. Professional Master (Social Work)
  3. Professional Master (Social Policy)

Since 2007, sociology has been recognized by the Ministry of Education as a national first-level key discipline. The department's areas of focus include theoretical sociology, applied sociology, anthropology, demography, folklore, social work, social policy, women's studies, and more. Additionally, the department has a humanities and social science research base under the Ministry of Education, a "Chinese National Community Research Base" established by four national ministries and commissions, and two postdoctoral mobile stations. The department also hosts 12 professional research centers and secretariats for national societies, such as the China Association of Social Work Education and the National Steering Committee for Professional Degree Education of Master of Social Work.

The department's orientation and talent training goals emphasize tradition, innovation, practice, and a foundation in China. The development philosophy of the Department of Sociology is to balance both basic and professional disciplines, integrating theoretical exploration with empirical research, and fostering both humanistic qualities and scientific rigor.
