Position Overview
Organization: Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Peking University
Location: Beijing, China
Introduction to the Department
The Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Peking University was founded in 2006 and officially began operations in 2007. As the most international scientific research institution of its kind in China, the institute is dedicated to establishing itself as a world-class center for astronomical and astrophysical research. The goal is to push forward basic scientific research in China to the highest international standards, fostering connections between China’s rapidly growing scientific community and those in developed countries.
In 2020, Peking University launched the Peking University Science Center for the China Space Station Project Survey Telescope (CSST), taking a leading role in organizing national research efforts in galaxies and active galactic nuclei. This project promises to make significant contributions to China's space station program.
The Department of Astronomy at Peking University comprises the Covili Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics and the Department of Astronomy itself, with 23 full-time faculty members and 20 postdoctoral fellows. The department boasts a highly diverse faculty, with 25% of the faculty and 20% of the postdoctoral fellows coming from abroad. English is the primary working language. The department fosters international collaboration, focusing on astrophysical theory, observational research, and the training of exceptional students and postdoctoral fellows.
The research at the Institute is centered around four major directions:
- Observational cosmology, galaxy formation, and evolution
- Interstellar medium, star formation, stellar and planetary systems
- Gravitational physics and high-energy astrophysical phenomena
- Computational astrophysics (multi-body simulation, fluid dynamics, and magnetohydrodynamic simulation)
