Job Description
1. Introduction to the Department
The School of Earth and Space Sciences at Peking University was established in 2001. It comprises multiple departments, including the Department of Geology, the Department of Geophysics, the Department of Solid Geophysics, the Department of Space Physics, the Institute of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems, and the Department of Urban and Environmental Studies. Peking University (originally Beijing Normal University) founded the first geology department in China in 1909, establishing a precedent for Earth science education in the country and laying the foundation for the development of geological science and education in China.
The school has a long history of excellence in geophysics, with undergraduate education in the field starting in 1958, making it the longest-running program of its kind in China. The Institute of Remote Sensing, founded in 1983, is one of the earliest research and teaching units dedicated to remote sensing theory and technology in China, with significant strengths in both research and teaching in remote sensing and geographic information systems.
Currently, the school includes 3 departments and 7 institutes, including:
- Institute of Continental Dynamics and Resource Engineering
- Institute of Minerals, Petrology, and Mineral Deposits
- Institute of Geochemistry
- Institute of Prehistoric Life and Environment
- Institute of Theoretical and Applied Geophysics
- Institute of Space Physics and Applied Technology
- Institute of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems
The school offers 5 undergraduate majors, 11 graduate programs (Master’s and Doctoral), and 4 postdoctoral mobile stations. It is home to two national "double first-class" disciplines, three national key disciplines, one national key cultivation discipline, and one Beijing key discipline. The school also hosts a national science talent training base in geology, two National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers, and several key laboratories, including one of the Ministry of Education and two key laboratories of Beijing.
With its strong faculty and comprehensive disciplines, the School of Earth and Space Sciences at Peking University has developed into a leading center for teaching and scientific research in the field of Earth and space sciences.
