1. Introduction of the Department

The history of the School of Foreign Languages and Chinese of Peking University can be traced back to the establishment of the Jingshi Tongwen Museum in 1862. In June 1999, the Department of English Language and Literature, the Department of Oriental Studies, the Department of Western Language and Literature, and the Department of Russian Language and Literature were established.

At present, the School of Foreign Languages and Chinese has 13 departments, 2 institutes, and 2 centers, with 21 undergraduate language majors, including 20 national first-class undergraduate majors. Nearly 40 foreign languages (ancient and modern languages) and cross-border language resources are available for education and scientific research. The school offers 1 first-level discipline doctoral program, 12 second-level discipline doctoral programs, and 1 postdoctoral mobile station. English Language and Literature and Indian Language and Literature are national key disciplines, and Asian and African languages and literatures are also national key disciplines.

The college has scientific research and teaching bases such as the Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education, the Research Center for Oriental Literature of Peking University, the National Foreign Language Non-common Language Undergraduate Talent Training Base, and the Beijing 'Belt and Road' Talent Training Base. It also has 11 national and regional research cultivation/filing bases of the Ministry of Education and 33 academic research institutions, such as the European and American Literature Research Center.

The discipline of Chinese Language and Literature of Peking University has ranked first or been rated A+ in the first-level discipline evaluation of the Ministry of Education and has been selected into the list of "double first-class" construction disciplines. English Language and Literature, Modern Languages, Linguistics, Classical Literature, and other related disciplines in the QS World University Subject Rankings maintain a leading position worldwide, ranking first among universities in the country.
