The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) is seeking qualified and committed Course Tutors in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to join the Centre for English Language Education (CELE).

About UNNC

About the Centre for English Language Education (CELE)

Since the establishment of the Ningbo campus in 2004, the Centre for English Language Education (CELE) has been dedicated to delivering high-quality English for Academic Purposes (EAP) teaching and supporting academic programmes taught in English.

Today, CELE is one of the world's leading EAP centres of its kind, employing around 90 academic staff. The Centre supports students across Preliminary Year modules, pre-sessional programmes, summer schools, and in-sessional language and academic skills programmes.

Applications are invited from experienced English language teaching professionals with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • EAP/ESP teaching, including online teaching and support through Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs)
  • EAP/ESP syllabus and curriculum design
  • EAP/ESP assessment
  • Teacher training, preferably including internationally recognised qualifications such as CELTA, DELTA, or equivalent

Successful applicants must hold a completed MA or MSc in TESOL, ELT, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related discipline, including an assessed teaching practicum. Applicants must also hold a recognised teaching qualification, if not included within their degree, such as Cambridge DELTA, LTCL DipTESOL, or an equivalent qualification. English must be the applicant's first language or applicants must demonstrate equivalent English language proficiency.

Experience teaching on university foundation programmes where English is the medium of instruction is highly desirable. Successful candidates will primarily teach intensive EAP programmes while providing ongoing academic support to students. Depending on experience and expertise, there may also be opportunities to contribute to teacher training, curriculum development, assessment design, and bespoke ESP training programmes.

Main Responsibilities

  • Teach up to 18 hours per week on credit-bearing and support EAP/ESP courses in accordance with the approved syllabus.
  • Undertake approximately 14 hours per week of lesson preparation, marking, feedback, and teaching-related administrative duties, including standardisation, report writing, and attendance at course and departmental meetings.
  • Participate in student assessment and invigilate examinations as required.
  • Provide pastoral and academic support through the University's personal tutorial system.
  • Contribute to course management, curriculum development, and programme design where appropriate.
  • Participate actively in staff development and continuous professional development activities.

Person Specification

Essential requirements include:

  • A completed MA or MSc in TESOL, ELT, Applied Linguistics, or an equivalent discipline, including an assessed teaching practicum.
  • A recognised teaching qualification, if not included within the degree, such as Cambridge DELTA, LTCL DipTESOL, PGCE, or PGCertEd.
  • Strong language analysis skills and the ability to provide clear, constructive feedback on students' spoken and written English.
  • The ability to teach and assess according to agreed standards while working effectively as part of a team.
  • The ability to work under pressure and meet marking and administrative deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, together with strong word-processing skills.
  • Excellent IT skills, including experience delivering teaching and student support through Virtual Learning Environments such as Moodle and Microsoft Teams.
  • English as a first language, or equivalent English language competence.
  • Substantial full-time EFL teaching experience, together with significant experience teaching EAP, such as UK university pre-sessional programmes.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary and multicultural environments.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.

Salary and Benefits

The annual salary ranges from RMB 357,386 to RMB 487,079, depending on qualifications and experience. Salary progression beyond this range is performance-based.
