Job Description
The Center for Transformative Science (CTS) at ShanghaiTech University is a pioneering interdisciplinary institution dedicated to innovations in big science, with a focus on enabling breakthroughs in extreme detection capabilities, such as free-electron lasers (FELs) and synchrotron radiation. The Center is engaged in the design, construction, and operation of large science facilities; the development of transformative photon- and electron-based detection and manufacturing technologies; and the advancement of strategic planning for major science initiatives. In addition, CTS fosters interdisciplinary research, cultivates scientific leaders, and accelerates the translation of disruptive technologies.
CTS is responsible for the beamlines and endstations of the Shanghai High repetition rate XFEL and Extreme light facility (SHINE) and the Shanghai Soft X-ray Free-Electron Laser (SXFEL). The Center’s scientific and technological scope spans:
- Methodologies and core technologies for photon science facilities
- FEL and synchrotron radiation applications in life and energy sciences
- Nonequilibrium and ultrafast physics and chemistry
- Light-matter and electron-matter interactions
- Advanced data analytics and processing
CTS is now establishing dedicated technical divisions and invites applications from outstanding candidates worldwide for Group Leader positions in the following areas: Laser, Optics, Diagnostics, and Mechanical Vacuum. Each group will focus on advancing enabling technologies for photon and electron science, supporting the scientific missions of SHINE and SXFEL, leading R&D in critical technologies, exploring next-generation X-ray solutions, and promoting the industrial translation of key innovations.
Responsibilities of Each Group
- Laser Group
- Operate and support of ultrafast laser systems for user experiments
- Research and development in ultrafast laser technologies and their applications
- Spearhead R&D in:
- High-repetition-rate high-energy femtosecond lasers
- Multi-wavelength ultrafast laser sources
- Synchronization techniques between femtosecond lasers and FEL systems
- Optics Group
- Operation and maintenance of beamline optics at SHINE and SXFEL
- Design and construction of new X-ray beamlines
- Pioneer next-generation X-ray beam manipulation/transport technologies
- Diagnostics Group
- Operation and maintenance of beamline and Endstation diagnostics at SHINE and SXFEL
- Pioneer next-generation X-ray beam diagnostic technologies
- Mechanical Vacuum Group
- Execution of mechanical and vacuum engineering tasks for facility construction and operation
- Leading R&D in key technologies for advanced light sources, including:
- Thermal management under high heat loads
- Precision surface figure maintenance
- High-stability beam transport systems
- Promoting the transfer and industrialization of critical mechanical and vacuum technologies
Responsibilities
- Execute facility engineering tasks; align group R&D with CTS’s strategic vision.
- Build and lead an internationally competitive research team.
- Develop group R&D platforms and accelerate technology translation.
- Foster cross-group collaboration to address complex scientific challenges.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in STEM fields; exceptional academic/technical expertise in the relevant area.
- Demonstrated innovation and leadership in strategic research planning.
- Proven teamwork; experience in renowned institutions/large-facility projects preferred.
- Physically fit for hands-on facility operations and team management.
Working Conditions and Remuneration
Compensation and benefits shall be implemented in accordance with the relevant regulations of ShanghaiTech University. A competitive salary, allowances, and welfare benefits will be offered based on individual circumstances.
