1. Introduction to the Department
The Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Peking University has a rich history, having been established 115 years ago. Today, it boasts the most complete discipline system of Chinese and Chinese language and literature in China. The department offers five undergraduate majors:
- Chinese Literature
- Chinese Language
- Classical Philology
- Applied Linguistics (Chinese Information Processing)
- Chinese Language and Literature (International Students)
The department also has 8 doctoral degree conferring points and 1 postdoctoral mobile station. Several second-level disciplines within the department have entered the world’s top academic ranks, establishing a solid foundation for further building a world-class Chinese language and literature discipline. According to the 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject, Peking University ranks 9th in "Modern Linguistics" and 10th in "Classical Literature and Ancient History," with "Linguistics" ranked 21st.
