1. Introduction to the Department

The Department of History at Peking University traces its origins back to the History School established in 1899 by the Beijing Normal University Hall. In 1902, it was renamed the Department of Chinese History and the Department of International History, and later in 1919, it was unified into the Department of History. In 1952, the department underwent further restructuring as various university history faculties merged, becoming the Department of History, which then offered three majors: Chinese History, World History, and Archaeology. The Department of Archaeology was established separately in 1983.

Currently, the department is composed of five core teaching and research departments:

  • Department of Ancient Chinese History
  • Department of Modern Chinese History
  • Department of Ancient World History
  • Department of Modern History of Europe and the United States
  • Department of Modern History of Asia, Africa, and Latin America

The academic strength of the Department of History at Peking University has long been recognized as a leader in China's history academic community. In the 2016 National First-level Discipline Review, the discipline of Chinese History received an A rating, and World History received an A+ rating. Both disciplines were later selected by the Ministry of Education in 2017 as "first-class disciplines."

In the years ahead, the Department of History aims to build on its traditional strengths, fostering integration and academic rigor, creating a competitive and innovative academic environment, and producing high-level academic achievements that contribute to the country’s development. The department seeks to continue training professionals who will lead the nation into the future and serve as social pillars with a sense of historical responsibility and mission.
