1. Introduction to the Department
The history of the School of Chinese as a Second Language of Peking University is derived from the "Peking University Foreign Students Chinese and Chinese Language Specialized Course" in 1952. In October 1984, Peking University established the Center for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (hereinafter referred to as the "Chinese Center"). On June 29, 2002, the School of Chinese as a Second Language of Peking University was established.
The college undertakes the teaching of "Basic Chinese" for the preparatory department for international students at Peking University, various inter-university exchanges and scholarship students, and graduate students of international students, and at the same time offers public elective courses such as "Overview of China", "Academic Chinese Writing", "Contemporary China", and "Basic Chinese" for all undergraduate students. Every year, the college enrolls more than 30 master's students majoring in teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages, more than 10 Chinese and foreign doctoral students, and the total number of Chinese and foreign master's and doctoral students is more than 150.
The School has four research rooms: Chinese Language and Application, Acquisition and Testing, Curriculum and Teacher Development, and Culture and Intercultural Communication. The academic activities hosted by the school mainly include "World Chinese Language Seminar", "Peking University Forum on Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages", "Summer Advanced Seminar on Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language", "Academic Forum for Graduate Students in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language", etc., and the academic journal "Journal of Chinese Language Teaching".
The School of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at Peking University has a team of teachers with high teaching standards, strong scientific research ability, interdisciplinary educational background, and international vision. Linguistics, applied linguistics, and international Chinese education have been incorporated into the "double first-class" discipline construction of Peking University.
