Job Description:

The Master of Arts in International Journalism Studies programme is seeking highly experienced journalists and/or academics qualified to teach one or more courses on a part-time basis as needed. Instructors will be considered for courses as they become available. Courses may include international newswriting and reporting, business newswriting and reporting, international relations for journalists, the Chinese media landscape, reporting AI and big tech, and advanced specialised reporting.

The ideal candidates for professional courses should have extensive journalism experience in news media. For conceptual and theoretical courses, a strong academic background with a PhD in journalism or a related field is preferred. Previous university or postgraduate teaching experience is preferred. Excellent communication skills, a strong sense of responsibility, and a passion for mentoring students are also essential. The medium of instruction for the Programme is English, and applicants must demonstrate a high level of proficiency in spoken and written English. 

Responsibilities include delivering 13 weekly three-hour in-person sessions (39 teaching hours) per course in accordance with the approved course syllabus and Course Intended Learning Outcomes; preparing and updating teaching materials (lecture slides, hands-on exercises, case studies); designing, administering, and grading all assessments (individual assignments, quizzes, and final group projects); providing timely feedback; holding regular student consultation hours; submitting grade reports according to deadlines; and any other work as assigned by the Programme Director. 

The initial appointment will be offered on a part-time basis commencing in January 2027 for Semester 2 of the 2026 - 2027 academic year or September 2027 for Semester 1 of the 2027- 2028 academic year. Reappointment thereafter will be subject to performance review and course availability. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

About the MAIJS programme

The Master of Arts in International Journalism Studies programme provides a senior level of education in the practices, operations, ethical issues, and concepts involved in journalism for a global audience. The programme offers two concentrations: International Journalism and Business and Financial Journalism.

The Programme produces a body of graduates able to work as skilful, reflective media practitioners; fosters further knowledge of international journalism for researchers; and provides a special international perspective in other professions and areas of life. The particular emphasis on Hong Kong and Greater China differentiates it from similar programmes elsewhere in the world and is designed to provide graduates with an understanding of how their own area of the world fits into global news practice. This speciality will make graduates suitable for work in a variety of fields in this region as well as competitive outside it. The MAIJS programme has a strong network of graduates all over the world working in media and communication and beyond.
