1. Introduction to the School of Engineering

Peking University has a rich history of engineering education, having established the School of Engineering (originally known as the Engineering Branch University) in March 1910. From 1946 to 1952, the School achieved significant accomplishments, with 23 alumni later being elected as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering in fields of education and scientific research.

In 1952, the national faculties were adjusted, and the School of Engineering was disbanded. However, the Department of Mathematical Mechanics was founded the same year by Professor Zhou Peiyuan and other prominent scholars, marking the first major in mechanics in New China. Since then, the department has made remarkable progress in teaching, scientific research, and infrastructure development.

In February 2005, Peking University decided to re-establish the School of Engineering, leveraging its strengths in science, medicine, and humanities. In 2006, the Department of Mechanics joined the School of Engineering.

The School has focused on cutting-edge science and technology, interdisciplinary research, and development to address national scientific and technological needs. Since its re-establishment, the School of Engineering has made great strides, including the establishment of one national key laboratory, 11 master’s programs, 10 doctoral programs, and 13 research institutes. The School also maintains 3 National Natural Science Foundation innovation groups and 2 Ministry of Education innovation groups. In 2015, it was rated as one of the pilot colleges for the Promotion Plan for Demonstration Colleges of University Internationalization.

The School aims to become a national engineering science education center, a research and development hub for future engineering technologies, a training center for engineering leaders and entrepreneurs, and a policy research center for national engineering strategies.

Research interests include mechanics, energy and resource engineering, advanced manufacturing, robotics, aerospace engineering, and industrial and systems engineering.
