1. Introduction to the Department
Peking University holds a historic role in the field of intelligence research. In 1985, the university, under the leadership of Mr. Cheng Minde and Academician Shi Qingyun, established the Information Science Center, combining efforts from over ten departments, including the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and the Radio Department. In 1988, Peking University established its first State Key Laboratory – the State Key Laboratory of Visual and Auditory Information Processing, marking a significant milestone in artificial intelligence research in China. The establishment of the Department of Intelligent Science in 2002 further cemented Peking University’s position as a leading force in the field.
In 2021, the Intelligent Academy was founded, followed by the recognition of Intelligent Science and Technology as a new first-level discipline by the Ministry of Education in 2022. The same year, Peking University and Beijing General Research Institute were approved to jointly create the National Key Laboratory of Cross-media General Artificial Intelligence. In 2023, the department also collaborated to establish an international joint laboratory for human-computer symbiosis, approved by the Ministry of Education.
The School of Intelligence, in partnership with the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and the Wang Xuan Institute of Computer Science, has significantly contributed to the development of intelligent science. The department's disciplines span a wide range of directions, such as computer vision, natural language processing, intelligent robotics, data intelligence, cross-media intelligence, and more. Under the guidance of Professor Zhu Songchun, a world-renowned expert in computer vision and artificial intelligence, the School of Intelligence has assembled a strong academic team. This includes 35 full-time staff members, among whom are 5 national talents, 5 young talents, and 4 distinguished scholars from Peking University’s "100 Talents Program."
