Founded in 1906, it is one of the oldest universities on mainland China and is listed in the country's "211 Project" of national key universities. The institution operates multiple campuses, in Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen.

The university offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs across economics, management, medicine, engineering and the humanities.
