Senior Engineer

Roles & Responsibilities:

Role Overview:
The Senior Engineer is primarily responsible for providing high-level engineering technical support and laboratory management services for the PQC-X Lab. The appointee will assist the Deputy Director of the PQC-X Lab in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of all relevant laboratories, engineering equipment, and technical systems. This position reports to the Deputy Director on a daily basis.
This is a critical role that requires both a solid technical foundation and strong management skills. As a core member of the PQC-X Lab's technical team, the appointee will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of complex instruments, technical guidance, lab safety management, procurement coordination, and supporting the research projects of faculty and students. This requires a high level of professional expertise and a forward-looking technical vision.
The role also requires building effective collaborative relationships with the university's facilities/equipment department, IT department, and external vendors. Additionally, the appointee will mentor junior technical staff and actively participate in the long-term planning and development of the laboratory.
Roles & Responsibilities:
•Oversee the daily operation, maintenance, and upgrade of the PQC-X Lab's IT systems and core computing equipment.
•Provide high-level technical support and guidance for the research projects and experimental courses of academic staff, researchers, and students.
•Lead or participate in the installation and commissioning of new lab builds, renovations, and major equipment (e.g., High-Performance Computing clusters).
•Take full responsibility for Health & Safety (H&S) management in designated laboratory areas, developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and conducting risk assessments.
•Organize and deliver technical operation and safety training for staff and students.
•Assist in monitoring the department's equipment budget, and take charge of the research, bidding, and procurement coordination for technical consumables and large equipment.
•Manage equipment assets, conducting regular inventory checks and handling the disposal of obsolete items.
•Liaise with external vendors and after-sales maintenance teams to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical faults.
•Provide technical support to other team members and complete other related duties assigned by the Deputy Director.

Qualifications:

Essential Qualifications:

•Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a related STEM field, with 3 years or more of relevant work experience.
•Proficient in professional software within the relevant engineering domain and skilled in hardware/software troubleshooting.
•Rich practical experience in laboratory management, engineering R&D, or related technical support fields.
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Chinese and English (able to fluently read English technical manuals and conduct professional communication).
•Highly responsible, rigorous, detail-oriented, with an extremely strong awareness of safety.
•Able to work in a multitasking environment, properly allocate priorities, and strictly adhere to deadlines.

Required Competencies and Skills:

•Master’s or Ph.D. in a related field, with 2 years or more of relevant work experience.
•Experience in low-level system development (e.g., C/C++), Linux system administration, or maintenance of High-Performance Computing hardware (e.g., FPGA, RISC-V, ARM) is highly preferred.
•Work experience in research laboratories of higher education institutions or large-scale R&D centers.
•Familiarity with laboratory safety standards within the UK higher education system (e.g., COSHH).
•Experience in mentoring and developing junior technical staff.
